Totem recognises the need for balance in our ‘lopsided’ world. Globalisation has skewed things somewhat against the publishing sector in many developing communities. Many are near-collapse. The reasons are many, chief among which is the neglect of linguistical difference, in favour of standardisation. This makes poorer communities vulnerable to cultural leaching, illiteracy,
and socio-political exploitation.
Totem tries to reverse this trend by unearthing the talent within African communities, and also writers and artists other cultures, for African as well as international audiences.
At least, that is what we think globalisation should be about.
To meet this interesting challenge squarely,
we have created specialist imprints for every sector we cover.
